通常魚缸(池)水色有清水、綠水、老綠水、澄清水及褐色水。
1.清水
清水是指無色無味透明的水，浮游生物含量較少，清澈見底，溶氧量充足，能夠有效地增加魚體的新陳代謝活動。在清水中飼養的金魚，特別是魚苗，求食量大，生長迅速，在炎夏效果更為理想。但清水對金魚體表色澤及皮膚黏液刺激較大，經常生活在清水中的金魚體色較淡。
2.綠水
綠水是由於水中富含葉綠素的藻類大量滋生自然形成的。清水在強光照射下，藻類繁殖迅速，水色逐漸轉綠。一般在夏天需3-4天，春天及秋天需10天，冬天則需數週時間。水色愈綠，水中的各種藻類也愈多，其中有些是金魚愛吃的輔助餌料。在冬天，金魚飼養在綠水中，有保溫及供餌的雙重作用。
金魚喜好清綠相結合的水質，因為綠水性軟，對魚體刺激小，金魚飼養在綠水中，不但體色豔麗、體健活潑，且不易生病，即使有小病，也可透過綠水的調養得到恢復。
綠水的養成最好不要使用過濾設備，因為過濾會抑制藻類的生成，因此如果過濾效果極佳的缸，要養成綠水反而困難，一般只需打氣加上日照便可，如經濟能力許可的話最好再加個斷電便會自動打氣的幫浦，因為晚上藻類也是行呼吸作用的，如果運氣不好晚上斷電，那魚兒可是會缺氧浮頭抗議的。
3.老綠水
俗稱老水。在老綠水中藻類完成了由旺盛轉向衰亡的過程，會有大量藻類沉入魚缸(池)底，水質會由豔綠轉為淡綠，若加入清水，數天後水色又會轉綠。
飼養金魚冬天多採用老綠水。由於冬天氣溫低，藻類生長緩慢，老綠水的水質可以維持很久，對金魚有益；夏天則嚴禁使用，因藻類生命短暫，大量死藻發酵，會使水質惡化，影響金魚的健康；春天及秋天為穩定金魚的體況，老綠水仍是一種較好的水質。
4.澄清水
澄清水是由清水直接轉化而來，水質極軟，透明度又高，微量元素含量較多，藻類含量極少，是一種透明度較高的水質。飼養在澄清水的金魚，若投餌充足，不但生長快速，且體色豔麗，兼具清水及綠水的優點。
培養澄清水的方法：一是在清水魚缸(池)中，每天投餵適量的水蚤，利用水蚤覓食水中藻類的原理，使其與藻類的自然增長速度相抵消，可有效控制藻類的繁殖，形成一良性循環，久而久之即可獲得澄清水。其水質的保鮮度，完全依靠每天水蚤的數量來維持。二是在家中飼養採用過濾設備，使缸水循環過濾以獲得澄清水。
5.褐色水
褐色水的顏色是由水中矽藻大量繁殖形成，其中有益藻類較少。由於矽藻難以被金魚消化吸收，在實際飼養中一旦水色轉為褐色即應換水。若經常餵食活餌、顆粒飼料，水色極易轉為褐色或黃褐色，此時應即換水改善水質。
There are fresh water, green water, old green water, clear freshwater, and brownish water.
1) Freshwater: The freshwater is colorless and tasteless, very clean and less plankton contents, limpid and contains full oxygen. It is effectively able to increase the metabolism of goldfish. Under the freshwater, the goldfish especially fry has much eating, and rapid growth, and the summer time is perfection for fry. However, the freshwater would stimulate to goldfish color and mucus of its body. So, the goldfish color would cause thin affection under the freshwater.
2) Green Water: Because of the water contains the larger amount of chlorophyl algae, it naturally propagates as green water. Under the strong illumination, the algae propagate very fast, the water gradually turns into green color. In summer it takes about 3 ~ 4 days, in spring it takes about 10 days, and in winter it takes about a few weeks. The more color changes in green the more algae propagated. Some algae are the assist baits stuffs for goldfish. In the winter, the green water helps goldfish for keeping warm and baiting assists.
The filtering is necessary equipment for propagating green water, because, the filter could control the propagating of algae. However, the stronger filtering would cause difficult to get green water. Basically, the simple air pump and sunshine are fine for getting green water. If capable, the air pump with auto electric power supply is the best facility, because the algae have respiration at night, so if the electric power is cut-off, the algae could still have respiration. When the electric power is cut-off, if there is not enough oxygen in the tank, the goldfish would appear with floating head on the above water level.
3) Old Green water: Known as old green water, the vigorous algae become feeble and a great deal of algae would sink into the base, then the water color would turn into thinner green color. Adding freshwater would turn the water into green color after a few days.
In winter, the old green water is very appropriate for goldfish due to the slow propagating of algae. But in summer, there is not recommended to use old green water for goldfish, because, the algae would become die and turn to ferment, then the water would become deteriorate and effect to the health of goldfish. In spring and fall, the old green water is good water quality and very recommended to use for goldfish.
4) Clear Freshwater: The clear freshwater is turning from the freshwater. It is higher transparency, soft, and contains many microelements and fewer algae. If the feeding is enough for goldfish, they would be growth rapidly and the body color would become very shinning. The water has excellent implementation of freshwater and green water.
a) Regularly adding the Cyclops into the freshwater daily would become clear freshwater, it is the principle of the virtuous circle of algae propagating and the Cyclops feeding. The water quality is depending on the number of Cyclops daily.
b)The complete filtering would also be able to get the clear freshwater.
5) Brownish Water: The larger propagating amount of algae would become the water turn into brownish. Good algae are not containing in the brownish water. Frequently feeding live baits and pallet would cause water color in brownish. Once the water color turns into brownish, the immediate water changing is necessary.
